History

The main building of Kartika Wijaya Hotel was built in 1891 as one of the Sarkies Family's villas, who also was the owner of Raffles Hotel in Singapore; Strand Hotel in Ranggon, Oranye Hotel (now Majapahit Hotel) in Surabaya and Niagara Hotel in Lawang.
At the 1st Dutch aggression, the building was used as a Dutch soldier camp/post until the 2nd military aggression. At the time, the underground level, located under the hotel's lobby was used as a hiding place.
The building itself was a long time ago known as "Jambe Dawe Building" (Jambe means "Pinang tree" and Dawe means blown leaves). The management of the hotel decided to preserve the pinang trees to commemorate the past.
